Georgetown Day School’s (GDS) construction project near Wisconsin Avenue and 42nd Street - on the northern edge of Tenleytown - is advancing quickly.The new building will unify the school’s two campuses, which are now four miles apart. The new building - on the former Safeway site – will house the Lower/Middle School (Pre-K to 8th grade), which is now on MacArthur Boulevard and will be near their existing High School campus on Davenport Street, NW. GDS also owns the former Marten’s Volvo dealership site on Wisconsin Avenue and is considering how to redevelop the property. There has been some discussion of constructing apartment buildings on the site.
Marriott International anticipates completing construction of their new headquarters at 7750 Wisconsin Avenue in downtown Bethesda in the second quarter of 2021 and opening the adjacent 244-room hotel in the first quarter of 2022.
Excavation and hauling operations along Wisconsin Avenue are underway and should be completed in July.
At all times, two-way traffic will be maintained "as reasonably as possible. Meanwhile, sidewalk closures remain in place along sections of Woodmont, Norfolk and Wisconsin Avenues."
The developers and general contractor hold bimonthly construction updates for the public in downtown Bethesda at the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center. The next update will take place on August 6.

There is nothing new to report on plans for re-tenanting vacant spaces in the Chevy Chase Pavilion. Signage on the windows of the former H&M store indicate that a retail tenant is being sought for that space. Elsewhere, the World Market (WM) store on the lower level of the Pavilion has, reportedly, signed a new 10-year lease on their space.
Target is moving forward with plans to open a 46,000 sq. ft. branch in Tenleytown in 2020.As reported before, the store will be in the space formerly occupied by a branch of Sears – next to the Tenleytown Metro.The Container Store and Ace Hardware continue operations elsewhere in the building.

Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens is exhibiting Mid-Century Master: The Photography of Alfred Eisenstaedt thru January 12, 2020. When he photographed heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post, the founder of Hillwood, for a 1965 issue of LIFE Magazine, Eisenstaedt "cemented her place among the most notable people of the twentieth century."

As is common among convenience stores, there is no place to sit and dine inside. Wawa offers food, beverages, desserts & much more. The company has more than 800 stores nationwide.

Capital Crab and Seafood opened at 5534 Connecticut Ave. on the DC side of Chevy Chase in June. The company is well known in the D.C. area for their food trucks.The company also owns the nearby Avenue restaurant.
Prima, a fast-casual restaurant featuring Italian cuisine, has opened at 7280 Woodmont Ave. in Bethesda Row.The restaurant is in space formerly occupied by Taylor Gourmet.
Peet’s Coffee at Wisconsin Place - near the corner of Wisconsin & Western Avenues - has added outdoor seating at umbrella tables since the opening in May. The company offers a selection of baked goods and sandwiches as well as freshly-made coffee and tea. Image below: The exterior of Peet's Coffee.
Junction Bakery & Bistro, the fast-casual restaurant based in Alexandria, Virginia, will, as reported previously, open in The Collection at Chevy Chase late this year in the former Ralph Lauren building.

The Collection at Chevy Chase has a summer lunch series on select days called Nosh and Notes. The local community and office tenants are encouraged to grab lunch & gather on The Green -as the tiered plaza across from Clyde's is called. The events typically include a food truck and music. There is nothing new to report on plans for the former Paneraspace on the corner of Willard Avenue & The Hills Plaza in Friendship Heights.
Chatter, the restaurant at the corner of Wisconsin Avenue & Jenifer Street in Friendship Heights, closed at the end of June. The owners, led by newsman Tony Kornheiser, bought and renamed the former Chad's restaurant in 2017. Kornheiser made his sportspodcasts from the restaurant. He will continue his podcasts from another location. The future use of the Chatter site is unknown.
Cafe Deluxe, the venerable restaurant on Wisconsin Avenue in Cathedral Heights, closed at the end of June. The lease on the restaurant, which was owned by Chef Geoff's Deluxe Hospitality (CGD), was up for renewal, and the property was, reportedly, in need of extensive renovation. Other branches of Cafe Deluxe and CGD continue operations as usual.
Summer flowers at the many sidewalk restaurants in Chevy Chase add considerable color to the community. Sushiko and the Capital Grille have two of the best displays this year.

Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens will have their annual French Festival in celebration of Bastille Day on July 13. There will be many diversions.
Strathmore is presenting David Dimitri - L'homme Cirque (THE ONE-MAN CIRCUS)on select days thru July 7 - except July 4. The world-famous high wire dancer and veteran of Cirque du Soleil and Big Apple Circus "performs an entire circus."
Adventure Theatre MTC is presenting The Cat in the Hat, based on the book by Dr. Seuss and directed by Adam Immerwhar, thru August 18. It's the classic tale of young Sally, her brother, & the mischievous cat in the hat.
The Puppet Co., led by Christopher Piper, Artistic Director, is presenting Circus! at Glen Echo Park, thru August 4. The "Greatest Show on Strings" features a collection of clowns, death-defying acrobats, and an amazing menagerie of fauna from the farthest reaches of the globe." The show is recommended for "Children of All Ages."
Imagination Stage is presenting The Ballad of Mu Lanthru August 11. The setting is China in a time of war, when a young heroine proves that girls can do anything....including save a nation. The show is considered "Best for Ages 4+."

Quotidian Theatre Company is presenting Hubert Henry Davies's The Mollusc, directed by Jack Sbarbori, at The Writer's Center in Bethesda thru August 4.It's the story of a woman whose aim is "to do nothing."The Edwardian comedy of ill manners debuted on the London stage in 1907.
The brick sidewalk above the Friendship Heights Metro Bus Station at Wisconsin & Western Avenues still has not been repaired.The condition of the sidewalk was reported to the County via the 311 program in March. Since then, at least two pedestrians have been seen lying on the sidewalk, where they had fallen.The delay in repair is, reportedly, due to uncertainby about who is responsible for it: the company which built the Metro Building, the County or the State. PLEASE NOTE:The Village of Friendship Heights is in no way responsible for the sidewalk.

The new pedestrian walk/don't walk signal on Wisconsin Avenue in Friendship Heights remains, as before, in the middle of the sidewalk on the west side of the avenue - near the Barlow Building. Concerned citizens have made repeated efforts to draw attention to the danger of having the signal pole in the middle of a space through which pedestrians, bikers, runners, baby carriages, scooters, medical gurneys, wheelchairs, skaters and others traverse.
The signal was previouly near the curb, where is was virtually out of the way.
